GENEVA, May 20 (KUNA) -- A Kuwaiti member of parliament called here on Monday for the publication of a periodical UN report on response to potential natural disasters.
The call was made by Mubarak Al-Najada during a joint meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, held here under the supervision of the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR).
Speaking to KUNA, the Kuwaiti MP said his call came out of the necessity of compiling national reports, rather than regional or international ones only.
He said such periodical reports should be similar to periodical parliamentary reports on human rights in every country so the application of the same principle to response to natural disasters could lead to the development of plans for response to natural disasters on the basis of the weak and strong points of every country.
Such reports would also mark political leverage on governments which should not neglect the dossier of disaster prevention, he added.
Although Kuwait does not face such problems as earthquakes, volcanoes or floods, it is not safe from relevant aftershocks and reflections, he said, adding that it is shared responsibility to reduce potential losses.
The dossier of natural disasters has become so global that its economic ramifications are negatively affecting various sectors, he said.
The Kuwaiti National Assembly's participation in this four-day meeting reflects its interest in global issues, he said, noting that Kuwaiti and Arab members of parliament are interested in domestic and international issues. (end) ta.mt KUNA 202309 May 13NNNN
