OIC urges UNHRC to consider rights of Palestinians, Myanmar Muslims

JEDDAH, March 2 (KUNA) -- Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu on Saturday called on the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva to address the sufferings of Palestinian people and Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
Israeli occupation and policies pose a continuing threat to the principles of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, he said in news remarks.
He listed key issues as Palestinian refugees, civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights in Occupied East Jerusalem; settlements in the occupied Arab territories; apartheid wall; blockade of the Gaza Strip.
Concerning the situation of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, the OIC chief said it constitutes a major concern of the OIC with particular reference to their right to citizenship.
In a speech before the recently held 22nd Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Ihanoglu stressed the importance of avoiding politicization of the council's resolutions, urging the human rights body to seek in earnest to address relevant issues. (end) yms.mt KUNA 022019 Mar 13NNNN
