Pakistans supreme court orders premier arrest

ISLAMABAD, Jan 15 (KUNA) -- Pakistans Supreme Court Tuesday ordered the arrest of the prime minister in the controversial rental power project case.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) hearing the Rental Power case ordered the arrest of 16 persons including Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf. The prime minister was at that time federal minister for water and power. He supervised expensive "rental power" projects that generated very little power at very high cost.
The court at that time too revoked his power as the minister as he was accused of receiving kickbacks in the project.
Declaring all rental power project contracts "illegal," the Chief Justice said legal proceedings should be carried out against all those involved in the corruption.
It was not yet clear whether the Premier stands disqualified or whether he will stands down. (end) amn.rk KUNA 151248 Jan 13NNNN
