Brahimi to hold new round of talks on Syria with US, Russian interlocutors this Friday

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 9 (KUNA) -- The Joint Special Representative for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, will meet in Geneva on Friday with US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov to further discuss the situation in Syria, it was announced here on Wednesday.
The three officials met last month to initiate discussions to reach a political solution to the crisis in the arab country.
Brahimi met earlier this week in Cairo with the President of the Syrian National Coalition Moe'z Khatib and his team, as well as with the Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabr Al-Thani and with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.
He is expected to brief the Security Council on these talks sometime this month. No date has been set yet.
In the meantime, the UN announced last week that more than 60,000 people were killed since mid-March 2011 when pro-democracy demonstrators took to the streets in an attempt to oust President Bashar Al-Assad. (end) sj.hb KUNA 091712 Jan 13NNNN
