(With photo) BRUSSELS, Dec 5 (KUNA) -- NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen Wednesday said the Alliance's ISAF mission in Afghanistan continues to make progress.
"Confident and capable Afghan Security Forces are key to this endeavour. And they are getting stronger every day," he told a meeting of NATO foreign ministers with non-NATO -ISAF contributing countries.
"Afghan troops and police are taking charge of security for 75 percent of the population. They lead 80 percent of all operations across Afghanistan. And they deliver 90 percent of their own training," he said. In sum, our strategy is working. Our timeline is on track. And our commitment remains firm," he added.
Meanwhile, NATO Foreign Ministers welcomed today the new Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze and looked forward to more cooperation in the context of the NATO-Georgia Commission.
During the meeting, Allies encouraged all parties in Georgia to keep up the momentum of the recent elections and to consolidate democratic progress, said a NATO statement. (end) nk.sd KUNA 051609 Dec 12NNNN
