Number of UNESCO associated schools in Kuwait rises to 48

KUWAIT, Oct 16 (KUNA) -- The number of schools associated to the UNESCO has risen to 48 in Kuwait, Secretary-General of Kuwait's National Commission for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Abdullatif Al-Buaijan said.
During the meeting of managers and coordinators of the UNESCO associated schools, which took place at Kuwait National Commission for UNESCO on Tuesday, Al-Buaijan explained that the commission is working to provide all "that is new and educational for the schools." He said that Kuwaiti schools' activities are very significant and distinct due to the efforts of their departments, referring to the introduction of a few new programs in coordination with the US Embassy, including "The Journalist," which achieved great success.
Al-Buaijan added that the program aims at creating a conscious understanding generation that can work in such a profession, in addition to instilling noble values in the hearts of students.
Furthermore, he expressed his deep regret for the lack of cooperation and commitment of some schools in the process of implementing the designed programs, stressing the importance of developing them in order to highlight the role of the commission in Kuwait, especially that togetherness increases success rate through the exchange of visits.
He also reviewed the work plan for the associated schools for the academic year from 2012-2013, which includes global issues, UN's role and its priorities and accomplishing the Millennium development goals that aim to eradicate poverty, achieve universal primary education, promoting gender equality, empowering women, reducing child morality and improving maternal health, in addition to creating means of anti-AIDS and malaria and other diseases.
He added that the work plan also includes a project of education for sustainable development and improving alternative energy sources and the celebration of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All 2012, and "due to the importance of this energy, UNESCO has been keen on promoting renewable energy derived from nature processes." The work plan will also include human right issues (right of education), which is essential to ensure the pursuit of human rights, adding that education promotes freedom and individual capabilities as well as enhancing and developing the right of every person to benefit from it without any exclusion.
He stressed that intercultural education is very important, especially in teaching world heritage and the study of Kuwait's cultural heritage, in addition to promoting awareness, especially among younger generations.
There will be a celebration ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Kuwait's accession to UNESCO, which will start in January and will continue until the end of the year, Al-Buaijan concluded. (end) mls.afh.ysa.ba KUNA 161531 Oct 12NNNN
