TEHRAN, Aug 30 (KUNA) -- The speech of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi
regarding the Syrian issue at Thursday's session of the ongoing 16th Summit of
the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was "interference in the internal Syrian
affairs", said Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moallem in an interview.
In highly critical remarks to Al-Alam Iranian channel, Al-Moallem said
Morsi's use of words such as "oppressive" in his speech constitute a breach of
NAM principles which do not condone such interference. "The statements
represent the position of a leader of a certain political party, not a NAM
Chairman!" he further exclaimed.
The Egyptian president had while addressing the Syria dossier said that the
events in Syria were "a revolt against an oppressive regime" and that
"supporting the Syrian people is a moral duty."
He went further to stress Egypt was willing and ready to cooperate with all
parties to stem the bloodshed in Syria, and that Cairo urges all parties to
take initiative towards this end and to help reach a solution for the crisis
in the Arab country.
This interview is published following reports, and counter-reports, earlier
in the day suggesting the Syrian delegation had walked out from the NAM
session in protest over the word "oppressive" used by Morsi in describing the
Damascus regime.(end)
