OIC, NAM summits provide opportunity for solving Syria crisis -- Iran Pres.

TEHRAN, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Wednesday the summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), due in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on August 14 and the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), due here on August 15-16, provide an opportunity to address the challenges of the Muslim world notably the crisis of Syria.
During his meeting here with Sughra Imam - the special envoy of Pakistani President Zardari, Ahmadinejad said he respects the rights and freedom of the Syrian people which are among the basic principles of the Islamic Republic of Iran, local media reported.
He made the remarks on the eve of the NAM foreign ministers meeting.
"The NAM foreign ministers' meeting here tomorrow and the OIC summit meeting in Mecca are good opportunities to replace military clashes with political and indigenous approaches in order to resolve disagreements," Ahmadinejad stressed.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that political approaches based on the interests of the Syrian people are the only way out of current situation," he said.
He said his country shares Pakistan the view that resolving the existing differences in Syria should stem from indigenous political approaches. (end) ms.gb KUNA 082319 Aug 12NNNN
