Egypt''s President sacks intelligence chief

CAIRO, Aug 8 (KUNA) -- Egyptian President Mohammed Mursi on Wednesday sacked Director of the General Intelligence Service (GIS) Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Murad Muwafi and named Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Ra'fat Shehata as a replacement.
He also sacked Governor of North Sinai Maj.-Gen. Abdulwahab Mabrouk in the wake of the bloody attack on an Egyptian security checkpoint on the borders with Gaza Strip on Sunday, Presidential Spokesman Dr. Yasser Ali told reporters here.
The President appointed Maj.-Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Zaki as commander of the Republican Guard Corps and asked the Defense Minister Field-Marshall Mohammed Hussein Tantawi to replace the commander of the military police Staff Maj.
-General Hassan Al-Rowini.
"He also named Ambassador Mohammed Fatehi Refa'a Al-Tahtawi chairman of the President's Court," the spokesman revealed.
"Meanwhile, Interior Minister Maj.-Gen. Ahmed Jamal-Eddin named Maj.-Gen. Majed Mustafa Kamel and Maj.-Gen. Usama Mohammed Al-Saghir as assistants to the minister of interior for the central security and Cairo security affairs respectively," he noted.
"The reshuffle aims to address the challenges facing the country at this critical stage of her history and press ahead with the achievement of the objectives of the revolution of January 25, 2011," the spokesman added.
"The bloody attack on the Egyptian border guards has nothing to do with the recent release of political detainees who were tried by military courts which ran counter to the principles of justice desired by the Egyptian society," he made clear. (end) rg.gb KUNA 082219 Aug 12NNNN
