Municipality elections kick off in Lebanon

BEIRUT, May 6 (KUNA) -- Ballot boxes for municipality and mayors elections opened at 7:00 a.m. (local time) on Sunday for voters to choose 37 municipal councils in different Lebanese regions.
The Ministry of Interior announced the victory of 19 municipal councils by acclamation.
Logistic, administrative and security preparations for these elections were completed under the supervision of the Interior Ministry.
In 2010 municipality and mayor elections took place in April, where the Council's mandate extends to six years.
As of Friday, lists that were unopposed were declared winners in 15 villages and towns out of the 57 that were originally set to have elections. Most of the by-elections are necessary because municipal councils were dissolved after the 2010 general polls. Others are newly established municipalities, and are holding by-elections for the first time. (end) ayb.lb KUNA 061120 May 12NNNN
