ISLAMABAD, May 3 (KUNA) -- While Pakistani soldiers are still striving to
dig out victims of massive avalanche on Siachin glaciers, Pakistan's military
chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani said Thursday that India has toughened its
stance on the disputed territory as compared to 1989.
India had now been demanding the re-determination of positions -- it takes
two hands to clap, Gen. Kayani told newsmen during his third visit to Gayari
sector of Siachin glaciers.
The military chief was reviewing progress on rescue operation. More than
one hundred soldiers were buried under massive avalanche on Gayari sector of
Siachin, which is disputed between India and Pakistan.
An Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) statement said that the military
chief was briefed about the progress of the ongoing work including efforts to
create a water course to safely drain the lake which was formed by the
blocking of the Gayari River by the avalanche.
Siachin, located on the northern tip of the divided Kashmir region, is
claimed by both India and Pakistan. Both archrivals have deployed thousands of
troops at elevations of up to 6,700 meters. Intermittent skirmishes have been
reported since 1984 but more troops have been killed by cold then bullets.
