Disarmament conf. due to hold first 2012 public plenary

GENEVA, Jan 19 (KUNA) -- The Conference on Disarmament, the world's sole multilateral forum for disarmament negotiations, will hold its first public plenary session of 2012, on January 24, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.
In accordance with its rules of procedure, at its opening meeting, the Conference "shall adopt its agenda for the year at the beginning of the session. The Conference shall take into account the recommendations made to it by the United Nations General Assembly, the proposals by its Members, and decisions of the Conference." The items on the agenda of the Conference in 2012 will discuss cessation of the nuclear arms race and nuclear disarmament; prevention of nuclear war, including all related matters; prevention of an arms race in outer space; international arrangements to assure non-nuclear weapon states against the use or threat of use of nuclear weapons; new types of weapons of mass destruction and new systems of such weapons, radiological weapons; comprehensive programme of disarmament; transparency in armaments; and consideration and adoption of the annual report and any other report, as appropriate, to the General Assembly of the United Nations. The Conference on Disarmament, established in 1979 as the single multilateral disarmament negotiating forum of the international community, was a result of the first Special Session on Disarmament of the United Nations General Assembly held in 1978.
